As the automotive industry advances toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), minimizing environmental impact has become a growing priority. In-mold coating technology, jointly developed by Uchihamakasei Corp. and Nippon Paint Automotive Coatings (NPAC), enables the simultaneous execution of resin molding and surface coating by injecting paint directly into the mold during the manufacturing of parts. Conventionally, resin components underwent separate molding, painting, and drying processes. By consolidating these steps, the new technology streamlines the manufacturing workflow, resulting in substantial energy savings and a notable reduction in CO2 emissions.

A Streamlined Process with a Smaller Equipment Footprint

In-mold coating technology forms a coating film on the surface of molded products by injecting paint directly into the mold. Unlike conventional spray coating, which typically achieves around 70% coating efficiency, this method delivers 100% efficiency by applying paint precisely where needed within the mold. Traditionally, large drying ovens were required, but in-mold coating completes the process entirely within the mold, significantly reducing equipment requirements and space. Additionally, by accelerating paint curing, drying time has been reduced from approximately one hour to under one minute—resulting in a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions.

Adoption of Solvent-Free, Environmentally Friendly Paint

The paint developed for in-mold coating is a solvent-free formulation containing virtually no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 60%. Drawing on our extensive experience in automotive coatings, this paint delivers performance that matches or exceeds that of conventional spray coatings, maintaining both visual appeal and functional durability even under prolonged exposure to harsh outdoor conditions. In addition to achieving exceptionally smooth surfaces, in-mold coating allows for the precise replication of intricate patterns engraved in the mold, enabling the creation of complex geometric designs and embossed textures previously considered unachievable. The technology also supports structural coloration, making it possible to produce iridescent effects and opening new avenues for innovative automotive design.

Promoting In-Mold Coating for Both Environmental Benefits and Aesthetic Excellence

A key advantage of our in-mold coating technology is its unique applicability, currently the only solution in Japan capable of coating large thermoplastic resin components. Thermoplastic resins, which soften when heated and harden upon cooling, offer a combination of strength, durability, and significantly lower weight compared to metals. Their lightweight properties contribute to improved fuel efficiency, driving their widespread adoption in automotive exterior parts. As the industry continues to prioritize vehicle weight reduction, our in-mold coating technology stands out by delivering both environmental advantages and high-quality surface aesthetics.
