Advancing LCA in DuluxGroup: Completed Issuance of 33 Environmental Product Declarations for Powder Coating Products
Overview
DuluxGroup has issued 33 new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its powder coating product portfolio. This enables customers using these products, as well as metal substrate manufacturers, to utilize DuluxGroup's data when creating or updating their own EPDs, thereby helping to enhance transparency across the industry and promote sustainable innovation.
What is an EPD?
An EPD is a framework for quantitatively evaluating environmental information on products using the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology. LCA is characterized by two main features: first, it is a calculation method that evaluates impacts from the very upstream stages of a product's life cycle, and second, it assesses a product's environmental impact not only in terms of global warming, but across multiple dimensions, including impacts on the atmosphere and aquatic environments.
As a method that is essential for reducing greenwashing risk and realizing a truly sustainable society, LCA is also used in public procurement and regulatory frameworks.

Products Covered by the EPDs Issued
With a focus on transparency and rigor, the EPDs are product and region-specific to reflect where our products are manufactured and sold, ensuring the environmental impacts reflect local conditions and product differences as accurately as possible.
Dedicated EPDs have been published separately for markets such as Australia and New Zealand for product ranges including Armourspray and Alphatec. EPDs for these ranges have also been published under our DGL International brand, covering Australian projects sourced offshore with DGL powder coatings manufactured and applied in Asia.

Benefits to Customers from the Issuance of EPDs
Our EPDs are based on comprehensive Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) providing independently verified environmental performance data to help building professionals make informed choices. They can be used to support documentation and credit acquisition for sustainability rating schemes such as Green Star, the IS Rating Scheme (Infrastructure Sustainability Council) and other tools used in Australia and New Zealand.
The EPDs can also be used by Dulux Powder Coatings customers and metal substrate manufacturers to complete and update their EPDs, promoting greater transparency and stimulating sustainable innovation throughout the industry.
Dulux Powder Coatings EPDs are classified as cradle to gate with options covering all applicable stages of the product life cycle, including raw material supply, transport, manufacturing, distribution, application, construction, end-of-life and recovery. To ensure the environmental impact of application practices is reported as accurately as possible, the EPDs account for two different overspray loss rates:
- A 10% loss rate assumes efficient factory conditions where most overspray is recovered and reused.
- A 30% loss rate represents less efficient settings where overspray cannot be recovered and ends up as waste.
The DuluxGroup team also published a handy ‘Understanding Environmental Product Declarations’ guide that provides useful information on the building life cycle, carbon in the built environment, the types of information contained in an EPD and how to use Dulux Powder Coatings EPDs.
