Railway paints go beyond aesthetics, enhancing the design and presence of each vehicle while delivering lasting protection against sunlight, wind, rain, and other harsh conditions.

Paint Technology Engineered to Withstand the Harshest Outdoor Conditions

Modern railway vehicles are designed not only to carry passengers safely and swiftly, but also to provide comfort and showcase distinctive design appeal. In recent years, they have also gained attention as environmentally sustainable modes of transport. Whether serving daily commuters or sightseeing travelers, paints are expected to contribute a flawless, beautiful finish.

Yet their role goes far beyond aesthetics. Paints must provide durable protection against the realities of high-speed rail, resisting intense vibrations, shockwaves created in tunnels, dirt and contamination, and the extremes of seasonal change, from summer heat and humidity to winter cold. To keep vehicles in prime condition under such demanding conditions, regular maintenance is indispensable. Even after new vehicles are deployed, we continue safeguarding their performance and safety through periodic repainting and careful upkeep.

Pursuing the Optimal Balance Between Ease of Application and Design Excellence

Until the 1990s, railway vehicles were most often painted in white or other monotone finishes, with glossy exteriors being uncommon. High-gloss paints were avoided because they tended to highlight dents and unevenness in exterior panels. From the 1990s onward, however, the adoption of alloyed metals and advances in press processing technology reduced welded joints, making it possible for more vehicles to feature sleek, metallic finishes. Metallic colors, however, present unique challenges. Their appearance changes with the viewing angle, requiring meticulous adjustment to ensure consistent quality across the entire vehicle. Applying metallic finishes is also more complex than using solid colors. Whereas a single coat of solid color typically achieves a thickness of 20–30μm (1μm = 1/1000mm), metallic paints demand multiple delicate layers of just 7–8μm each, applied evenly to achieve the desired brilliance. Finally, a clear protective clear coat is added to preserve both appearance and durability. Our Group is committed to developing advanced paints that minimize the number of coats required while delivering high-quality finishes that enhance the aesthetic appeal of railway vehicles.

Bringing the Customer’s Color Vision to Life

Paints for railway vehicles are typically selected from proven materials, as every component must meet stringent industry standards and introducing new materials can be a lengthy process. Even within existing options, the range is vast, around 20 variations for red, more than 10 for blue, and roughly 20 for metallic shades. When combined, the possibilities number in the tens of thousands. The selection process begins with sample applications on flat panels to assess basic color development, followed by trials on three-dimensional shapes to study the interplay of light and shadow. Once the concept is refined, larger surfaces are tested for confirmation. Through this careful, iterative process, the optimal shade is identified.Equally important is the role of the designer, who serves as the bridge between customer and development team. Through open communication, continuous feedback, and precise adjustments, we work hand in hand to transform the customer’s vision into reality.
