Launching the second PROTECTON series, “PROTECTON Interior Wall VK-200” - Anti-viral/Anti-bacterial water-based interior paint using a visible light-responsive photocatalyst -

Nippon Paint Co., Ltd., a group company of Nippon Paint Holdings Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Chairman, President & CEO: Masaaki Tanaka), which handles architectural paints, will start sales of “PROTECTON Interior Wall VK-200”, the indoor anti-viral and anti-bacterial water-based paint using a visible light-responsive photocatalyst, on October 28, 2020 in Japan.

PROTECTON Interior Wall VK-200 offers better workability than conventional products using a visible light-responsive photocatalyst, at an affordable price. Moreover, the paint contains almost no volatile compounds (ultralow VOC design). It is an eco-friendly water-based paint that supports a wide range of anti-viral and anti-bacterial measures.

This paint adopts a visible light-responsive photocatalyst, reacts to indoor lighting, and suppresses viruses and bacteria adhering to the paint film surface by 99%* or more, generating very little odor and assuring safe indoor application. The reaction of the photocatalyst on the paint film surface suppresses viruses and bacteria adhering to the wall as long as the paint film is not damaged, peeling off, or excessively stained on its surface.

Nippon Paint Holdings Co., Ltd. launched the “PROTECTON” brand in September 2020 as a product brand with anti-viral and anti-bacterial functions. PROTECTON Interior Wall VK-200 is the second product in this series. In the near future, an additional version for DIY/household use will be introduced.

The Nippon Paint Holdings Group plans to expand the “PROTECTON” series to offer a wide lineup of anti-viral and anti-bacterial paints, for uses ranging from commercial to DIY and household use, thus providing customers with safety and security.

* Based on test results with bacteriophage Qβ, JIS R 1756 This will not guarantee effectiveness against all or specific viruses or fungi, regardless of adhering or airborne, or show preventive or therapeutic effect against disease. * The paint does not suppress indoor airborne viruses.
* The anti-viral and anti-bacterial performance will continue as long as the paint film is not damaged, peeling off, or excessively stained on its surface. Damaged paint film includes peeling of the paint film due to normal aging deterioration.
* The product is not designed for medical purposes (e.g., medical supplies, medical equipment). The product suppresses viruses that adhere to a surface, but does not show the effect of preventing infection.
* The performance may vary depending on the shape of the object to be coated, the conditions of the base material, weather conditions, and construction conditions.
