Nippon Paint Coatings Selected for Kintetsu Railway’s Sightseeing Train Les Saveurs Shima― Deep blue and luminous white exterior evoke the sea of Ise-Shima; train service begins November 1 ―
Nippon Paint Industrial Coatings Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & President: Yutaka Kagami; hereinafter, the “Company”) is pleased to announce that its coatings have been selected for the exterior of Les Saveurs Shima, a restaurant train operated by Kintetsu Railway Co., Ltd. between Kintetsu Nagoya Station and Kashikojima Station. Scheduled to begin service on November 1, the train features an exterior that combines a rich metallic blue with a luminous white, evoking the sea, white sands, and sunlight of Ise-Shima. The colors capture the region’s refreshing, open atmosphere.
Advanced Coating Technology for Lasting Protection and Distinctive Railcar
Railway coatings serve two essential functions: enhancing visual appeal and providing lasting protection. Through color and gloss, they enhance a train’s image and complement the surrounding scenery, while safeguarding its exterior from dirt, corrosion, summer heat, and winter cold. While many conventional commuter trains feature a single-color finish, metallic coatings are increasingly used on luxury and sightseeing trains to create a distinctive appearance and strengthen brand value. With regional identity and design central to the appeal of sightseeing trains, Les Saveurs Shima features a metallic blue finish that evokes the sea of Ise-Shima. The coating incorporates interference mica*―particles that create subtle shifts in color depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions by selectively reflecting specific wavelengths of light. Combined with aluminum particles and the base color, it creates a shimmering effect reminiscent of sunlight sparkling on the water, giving the train an ever-changing appearance as the light and viewing conditions shift throughout the day.

* Interference mica: An effect pigment consisting of mica particles coated with metal oxides such as titanium dioxide and iron oxide. Through light interference, it creates subtle shifts in color depending on the viewing angle and how light strikes the surface.
Engineered for Consistent Color, Refined Light Reflection, and Ease of Application
The white sections are designed to appear luminous in bright sunlight, creating a striking contrast with the metallic blue finish. A soft white with a subtle yellow undertone evokes the white sands of Ise-Shima and the foaming crests of breaking waves. The coating formulation also places a strong emphasis on ease of application, helping reproduce the intended color consistently across variations in application technique and working conditions. Precisely selected and blended effect pigments give the metallic finish a uniform color and a consistent, refined interplay of reflected light. The Company will continue to advance coating technologies that preserve beauty through lasting protection while expanding the possibilities of design. Working alongside railway operators, we remain committed to enriching the landscapes through which their trains travel.
