Nippon Paints Celebrates the 140th Anniversary of its Founding
Nippon Paint Holdings Co., Ltd. (head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Chairman, President & CEO: Masaaki Tanaka) celebrated the 140th anniversary of its founding on March 14, 2021. The company was established in 1881.
Founded under the name Komyosha, the company’s initial mission was to develop products to address the problem of lead poisoning. Since then, Nippon Paint has gone from developing Japan’s first domestically produced paint to using its technology to find solutions to global social issues.
Message from the President and CEO
The celebration of our 140th anniversary would not have been possible without the loyalty of our customers who have used our products for many years, our partners who support business operations, our regional community members who promote our brand, and our shareholders who have invested in us. As a result, we have been able to expand our company to become Asia’s largest global coatings manufacturer, headquartered in Japan, with a workforce of almost 34,000.
Today, we remain committed to finding solutions to social problems by using innovative paint and coating technologies while delivering sustainable value for our shareholders. Our 60-year partnership with the Wuthelam Group allowed us to create and maintain a joint venture business in Asia; with the addition of Dunn-Edwards in 2017 and Betek Boya and DuluxGroup in 2019, we have been able to expand our business to the U.S. and Europe.
A wide range of pressing social issues including climate change, air and water pollution, and population aging and decline can be affected by coatings and paints. Our most important company priority is the use of technology to find solutions to those problems. For example, we are partnering with the University of Tokyo to conduct research on the effectiveness of our anti-virus PROTECTON series of products against COVID-19. We also engage in activities to address climate change and help communities achieve the goal of zero CO2 emissions. We support initiatives to improve educational opportunities, meet the needs of the socially disadvantaged, and respond to natural disasters. Accelerated efforts to improve our digital capabilities will reform our supply chain platforms. All of these programs will help us to achieve sustainable business development.
On March 5, we announced our new mid-term management plan to fulfill our responsibility to society. We believe that challenges and changes are not problems, but opportunities, and they should stimulate us to find new sources for creating growth. We must be willing to take advantage of this difficult business environment to be even more competitive and to reach aggressive profitability goals. Our plan is to achieve revenue of 1.1 trillion Japanese yen, excluding M&A activities, an operating profit of 140 billion Japanese yen, and an EPS of 225 Japanese yen by 2023.
Fourteen months have passed since I became President and CEO of Nippon Paint and I owe a debt of gratitude to my predecessors who laid the groundwork for our current success. As we move into our 141st year, we want to deepen our ties with our overseas partners, create new synergies, and develop stronger collaborative processes. Our ultimate goal is to become the industry leader, not only in Asia, but across the globe. We are all responsible for meeting the needs of today as well as handling the challenges of the future if we hope to reach this position. Through the Power of Teamwork, we can make Nippon Paint a company which will continue to contribute meaningfully to society for the next 50 to 100 years.
New 140th anniversary logos
To commemorate our 140th anniversary, we have designed two new logos. The first, which is for global use by all groups, features the number 140 in the center. The second logo, which describes how our company sees the world reads “Paint Wonder”. These logos will be used on all business cards, on our corporate website and in advertising and other promotional material.
