As people age, many experience a decline in vision that can affect daily mobility and increase the risk of falls. Simple activities such as walking to the dining room, using the restroom, or going down stairs can become more challenging if the surrounding environment has not been designed to meet their physical needs.

Through its CSR program Colouring Lives, Nippon Paint Indonesia carried out an environmental revitalization project at Marfati Nursing Home in Tangerang, Banten, to help create spaces that are safer, more comfortable, and more elderly-friendly. The initiative focused on the use of safety-based colors and visual cues in key areas of the nursing home, while also engaging residents through an interactive community activity.

Using Color to Support Safer Daily Mobility

The revitalization project focused on higher-risk areas such as stairways, toilets, activity pathways, evacuation areas, and other public facilities. By strategically applying contrasting colors and visual markers, the nursing home environment was designed to make key areas easier to recognize, improve orientation during daily activities, and reduce the potential risk of falls.

This approach demonstrates how paint can contribute beyond aesthetics by improving visibility, orientation, and everyday safety. In this case, color was used to support safer movement and greater confidence for elderly residents, particularly in spaces where visibility and wayfinding are important.

Applying Products for Durability, Visibility, and Hygiene

As part of the program, Nippon Paint donated 180 liters of paint and applied a combination of products selected according to the functional requirements of each area. These included Nippon Epoxyguard for floor areas requiring high durability, Weatherbond Max for weather protection exterior paint, Nippon Easywash for easy-to-clean anti-germ interior paint, and NeonGlo glow paint for enhanced visibility.

Each color and product type was selected for a specific function, including marking hazardous areas, wheelchair paths, toilets, evacuation routes, and safety points so they remain clearly visible even in low-light conditions. The use of easy-to-clean and anti-germ interior paint also supported a cleaner indoor environment in shared living spaces.

Creating a More Supportive Environment for Elderly Residents

The project was intended to support elderly residents through the thoughtful use of color and functional coatings. By making important areas easier to identify, the revitalization supports a more accessible and reassuring environment for everyday movement.

Sister Regina, Chairperson of Marfati Nursing Home Foundation, shared that the contrasting colors have helped residents feel more confident and safer when walking independently, particularly around stairs and toilets.

Building Connection Through Community Activities

In addition to the physical revitalization, the initiative included an interactive program called “Sabtu Bersama Oma & Opa” (“Saturday with Grandma & Grandpa”). During this session, the Nippon Paint internal team invited elderly residents to take part in creative activities, social interaction, and light safety education in a warm and enjoyable atmosphere.

This added a community engagement element to the project, combining environmental improvements with social interaction and resident participation.

Creating Elderly-Friendly Environments Through Color

Aligned with the Colouring Lives framework, the initiative reflects Nippon Paint Indonesia's belief that color can do more than transform spaces; it can also help create environments where people of all ages feel safer, more confident, and better supported in their daily lives.

Combined with community activities for residents, the initiative shows how paint can help support safety, accessibility, and well-being in later life.
